On the left is Death: a grinning skeleton in a dark robe patterned with crosses, gripping a club. On the right is Life: a tangle of bodies, with a baby, young mother, lovers and an old woman, all asleep beneath a blanket of colourful circles and flowers. A dark, empty space separates them. Death watches patiently as they sleep.
Klimt originally painted the background in gold, and the work won first prize at the 1911 International Exhibition in Rome. He continued refining it until around 1915, when he replaced the gold with the deep, dark background seen here.
Though the subject is weighty, the painting holds a sense of tenderness. Give it room in your living area, whether in an Auckland villa or a modern Wellington home. The poster is available in several sizes, framed or unframed, and sits among the major works in our Klimt art prints and posters.
The original is on display at Vienna’s Leopold Museum. To explore the city around it, take a walk through Klimt’s Vienna.
