The Dinner Table (1897) by Henri Matisse - Poster

A gentle sense of activity runs through this early scene by Henri Matisse. A hostess arranges flowers beside a long table set with fruit, glass decanters and gleaming cutlery. Deep greens and wine reds ground the room, while chalky whites and soft blues bring a cool note to the linen. Loose, assured brushstrokes catch the light on silver and glass, drawing your eye from plate to pear and back.

Matisse turns an everyday ritual into something intimate, almost theatrical, with reflections doing much of the storytelling. We’re drawn to the contrast between structure (the neat rows of plates and carafes) and gesture (his quick, expressive brushwork).
