An old timber farmhouse, washed in grey-blue and leaning slightly, sits beneath the shade of mature fruit trees. Leaves cover the upper half of the scene, while grass and wildflowers fill the lower part. The house rests between them, as though you’d stumbled upon it during a country walk.
The setting is Upper Austria in 1911, near Lake Attersee. The German title, Bauernhaus in Buchberg, refers to the hamlet where the house once stood. Klimt builds up the foliage with dot after dot, drawing on French Pointillism, though the finished effect feels more like embroidery than science.
We like it in a kitchen or bedroom, wherever a touch of the countryside would feel at home. It sits within our Gustav Klimt collection, alongside his garden and lake scenes. The poster is available in several sizes, with the option to add a frame, and would sit comfortably in a Kiwi home.
