Small boats float on a green, glassy river, each with one or two men holding long fishing rods. Some wear bowler hats, one stands at the stern, another waits on the grassy bank in the corner. Reflections of trees stretch down through the water in long wavering lines.
Monet lived at Poissy, west of Paris, from late 1881 to the spring of 1883, and did not like the town much. He did enjoy the river, though, and this quiet Sunday scene, now in the Belvedere in Vienna, is full of humour: the fishermen are so still they look like part of the landscape.
A relaxed picture for a living room, an office or a country house. It sits among the river scenes of our Monet art prints, from Argenteuil to Giverny. More about his moves along the Seine in our article on Monet's life.
