A terrace above the sea on a bright, windy day. Two flags snap on their poles, the French tricolour and a red and yellow one, gladioli and nasturtiums blaze in the flower beds, and wicker chairs face the water. An elderly man in a straw hat sits in the foreground, a couple chats by the railing, and dozens of sailing ships and steamers cross the horizon.
Monet painted it in the summer of 1867 at Sainte-Adresse, near Le Havre, where his family spent the holidays. The seated man is probably his father. The picture is built in flat bands, terrace, sea and sky, in a way that recalls the Japanese woodblock prints he already admired. It hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Bright and graphic, it is a joyful centerpiece for a living room or an office. Find it among our Claude Monet prints and posters, and read our article on Monet's youth in Normandy. Several sizes.
