A big haystack throws a cool shadow on the right, and in that shade, almost hidden, a woman and a child rest in the grass. Behind them a line of young trees sways in the breeze, and a smaller stack sits in the sun on the left, under a sky full of light clouds.
Monet painted this meadow near Giverny in 1885, two years after moving there. It is a summer scene rather than a study of light, and the figures lying in the shade give it a holiday mood. Five years later, the same subject would become his most famous series.
Fresh and summery, it suits a living room, a kitchen or a country bedroom. Compare it with the 1891 grainstacks in winter and at sunset in our Monet art prints. The story of the series is told in our article on Monet. Several sizes, framed or not.
