Rain slants across the picture from the right, and the sea comes in as a white mass of foam. On the beach, a few small figures lean into the wind, and the cliffs behind them are barely visible through the downpour.
When Monet returned to Pourville in the winter of 1897, he no longer looked for summer light. He went out in the worst weather and painted squalls like this one, with long diagonal strokes for the rain and swirls of white and grey for the waves.
Wild and atmospheric, it gives character to a study, a hallway or a seaside house. Our Claude Monet collection includes calmer days on the same beach too. For the story of his returns to the Normandy coast, read our article on Monet. Several sizes, framed or not.
