A frozen riverbank under a sky the colour of milk. The trees in the background are white with frost, the bushes in front stiff and brittle, and a small boat lies abandoned on the bank. Everything is painted in creams, pale pinks and frozen blues.
The winter of 1879 to 1880 was one of the coldest of the century in France. At Vétheuil, a few months after Camille's death, Monet went out into the frost and painted this silent landscape, now at the Musée d'Orsay. The canvas is long and low, and we print it with a light border so that the whole riverbank is kept.
Calm and almost monochrome, it suits a white bedroom, a minimal living room or an office. Our Monet prints and posters include the thaw that followed a few weeks later. For that difficult winter, read our article on Claude Monet. Several sizes.
