Long, blade-like leaves sweep across the lower right in strokes of yellow-green, and among them the irises open in small clusters of violet and mauve. Everything else is a dense tangle of blue and green, with a patch of ochre light at the top, as if seen through water.
Monet planted irises all along the banks of his water garden at Giverny. During the First World War, in his seventies and with failing sight, he painted them in large, loose canvases that look forward to abstract painting. There is no horizon here, only the plants pressed close to our eyes.
Deep and immersive, it suits a bedroom, a bathroom or a contemporary living room. Pair it with a water lily painting from our Monet posters for a corner of Giverny at home. Our article on his late years tells the whole story. Square format, several sizes.
