Eight years after his first version, Klimt painted a second Judith, this time as a very different figure. Slender and taut, almost on edge, she strides across the canvas with her hands curled like claws. At the bottom, she carries Holofernes’ head in a cloth. Her dress is pieced together in black, red and gold.
The painting’s strikingly tall, narrow format is bordered on both sides by bands of gold. Venice acquired it in 1910 after the Biennale, and it remains at the Ca’ Pesaro Museum of Modern Art today. For many years, it was known as Salome.
This graphic, dramatic work needs a little breathing room on the wall, perhaps in an entranceway or hallway. Its proportions would sit well in a Wellington villa or a contemporary Auckland home. The poster is available in several sizes, with an optional frame. Display it alongside Judith I, also in our Klimt art print collection.
