A flat brown field stretches to a low horizon where a few farm buildings catch the light. Above, the sky takes up three quarters of the picture: blue streaked with long white clouds, painted with broad, confident strokes.
This small early landscape dates from the mid-1860s, when Monet, just over twenty, was learning from Eugène Boudin and Johan Barthold Jongkind on the Normandy coast. Both taught him that the sky was the real subject. The canvas is very long and narrow, so we print it with a wide light border to keep the composition intact.
