A young woman in a striped dress sits on the grassy bank under a tree, looking out over the river. A small rowing boat is moored beside her, and across the water the houses of a village, their roofs and walls reflected in flat patches of colour.
The woman is Camille, who would become Monet's wife in 1870. In the summer of 1868 they stayed at Bennecourt with their baby son, though Monet was so poor that they were soon evicted from their inn. The painting, now at the Art Institute of Chicago, shows none of that: only a bright, still afternoon.
