A strip of red poppies flows down the middle of a small valley like a river, between slopes of blue-green oats. Dark bushes dot the hillsides, white flowers bloom in the lower left, and the top of the hollow is closed by a line of trees under a grey sky.
Monet painted this hollow near Giverny in 1885. The composition is unusual: no horizon, no figure, just the shape of the land and a red line drawing the eye into it. The painting is now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Graphic and vivid, it suits a living room, an office or a bedroom with neutral walls. Our Monet prints and posters gather his poppy fields from several decades. To learn more about his early Giverny years, read our article. Several sizes.
