Five years on from her famous golden portrait, Adele Bloch-Bauer sat for Klimt once more, this time with a strikingly different result. Gold is nowhere to be seen. She wears a long white coat with blue stripes and a broad black hat, set against a pink, green and violet wall adorned with small Asian figures and horsemen.
She is the only woman Klimt painted twice in a full-length portrait. This second version, created in 1912, reflects his growing interest in colour and East Asian art. Following a lengthy restitution case, the painting was sold in 2006 and has since been held in private collections.
