Klimt never completed this portrait, and that’s part of its appeal. The face is finished: dark hair, pale skin, a black ribbon at the throat and a white lace collar. Below the shoulders, the dress remains a pencil sketch on bare canvas, with a few pink and blue flowers touched in here and there, as though he paused mid-thought.
Amalie Zuckerkandl was married to urologist Otto Zuckerkandl and belonged to the circle of Viennese families who commissioned and collected Klimt’s work. He painted her portrait in his final years, and it was still in his studio when he died in 1918. The background forms a soft patchwork of greens and yellows, more like a garden than a studio wall.
You can explore his late portraits in our Gustav Klimt poster collection. This print comes in several sizes and is available framed.
