Emilie Flöge stands with one hand resting on her hip, dressed in a long gown of rich blue, patterned with gold, green and violet spirals and dots. Her pale, composed face is framed by dark curls and a patterned collar. The simple, earthy backdrop leaves the dress to command the space.
Emilie was Klimt’s lifelong companion and a fashion designer who ran a celebrated salon in Vienna with her sisters. He painted her in 1902, when she was 28. She reportedly wasn’t especially taken with the portrait, which was sold to the city of Vienna in 1908. It now hangs in the Wien Museum.
Its elegant, vertical format suits a bedroom, dressing room or hallway, from a Wellington villa to a modern Auckland home. The poster is available in several sizes, with or without a frame. Our Gustav Klimt collection also features landscapes from summers spent at the Attersee.
Emilie’s salon is one of the stops on our stroll through Klimt’s Vienna.
