Friederike Maria Beer stands at the centre of a battle. Around her, warriors with swords and painted faces gallop and fight, in a scene inspired by an East Asian vase. She appears not to notice. With her hands clasped, she wears a dress patterned with zigzags and a fur jacket turned inside out to reveal its colourful silk lining.
Both fabrics came from the Wiener Werkstätte. Turning the jacket around was Klimt’s idea, allowing him to paint the pattern. Beer was a young woman in Viennese society who also sat for Egon Schiele. Painted in 1916, the portrait is now held by the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
Full of activity, joy and stories, this portrait makes an engaging talking point in a living room or office, from a Wellington apartment to a home elsewhere in Aotearoa. Choose from several sizes, with framing available. Discover more of Klimt’s later portraits in our Klimt art prints.
