A group of white sailboats glides on the Seine, their sails tall and bright against a pale sky. Their reflections fall into the water as long broken stripes, and on the right bank, a red-roofed house and green trees are mirrored in thick dabs of colour.
Painted around 1872 in Argenteuil, this small canvas is a manifesto of Impressionism: quick, broad strokes, reflections painted as separate patches of colour, and the feeling of a moment caught on the spot. It is now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
Breezy and luminous, it suits a living room, a study or a bathroom. Our Monet prints and posters include the regatta at Sainte-Adresse and the boats of Argenteuil from other years. For his time in the town, see our article on Claude Monet. Several sizes, framed or not.
