The great Gothic façade rises in shades of blue, its portals, rose window and pinnacles barely solid, as if carved out of morning mist. On the left, the square Tour d'Albane fades into a pale pink sky. The surface of the painting is thick and crusty, like old stone.
In 1892 and 1893 Monet rented rooms facing Rouen Cathedral and painted its façade more than thirty times, from dawn to dusk. This is one of the early morning views, when the sun has not yet reached the stone. It now belongs to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Cool and mysterious, its tall format suits a hallway, an office or a bedroom with blue tones. Our Monet prints and posters include the same façade in full sun and at other hours. Our article on Monet's series tells how he worked in Rouen. Several sizes.
