A huge wave crashes against the cliffs, throwing up a cloud of white spray that hides the base of the rock. The Porte d'Aval arch stands dark in the background, the sky is a low grey, and in the lower right corner two tiny figures stand on the beach, watching the storm.
Monet spent several weeks at Étretat in February 1883, in the middle of winter. He was fascinated by the violence of the sea and painted from the beach, sometimes very close to the waves. The two figures give the scene its scale: the cliff is enormous, the people very small.
Dramatic and wild, it suits an office, a living room or a seaside house. Our Monet posters include calmer days at Étretat from 1885. Our article on his life follows him along the Normandy coast. Several sizes, framed or unframed.
