A narrow street in Honfleur climbs gently towards the sun. Tall half-timbered houses line both sides, one painted yellow with a sign over the shop, and their shadows cut the street diagonally in two. A man in a red shirt walks towards us, and a few women chat in doorways.
In 1864 the young Monet, aged twenty-three, spent the summer in Honfleur with his friends Boudin and Jongkind. This street view is one of his first finished paintings, solid and clear, with strong contrasts of light and shade. You can still walk down the Rue de la Bavole today.
Charming and sunny, it suits a hallway, a kitchen or a study. Our Claude Monet art prints gather his early Normandy works from Honfleur, Le Havre and Sainte-Adresse. Our article on Monet tells the story of his beginnings. Square format, several sizes.
