Night over a harbour entrance. A dark sailing boat leans into the wind, a steamship trails its smoke on the left, and a lighthouse on the jetty throws a small red point into the black water. Above them, the moon tears a hole in heavy clouds and silvers a strip of sea.
Monet was only about twenty-four when he painted it, probably near Honfleur on the Normandy coast where he spent his early summers. It is the opposite of what we expect from him: thick, dark paint, almost no colour, the drama of a Romantic painting. Yet the subject is already the one he would chase all his life, the light on water.
Hang it in a study or a living room with deep blue or charcoal walls. It is one of the earliest works in our Claude Monet collection. Choose your size and frame, then read how the young Monet found his way.
