Dawn over the harbour of Le Havre. A sailboat glides in the foreground, a rowing boat with a few figures waits on the right, and behind them the masts of moored ships stand like a forest in the mist. The whole scene is green-blue, with a few strokes of orange where the sun rises.
Painted in Le Havre in 1873, this canvas is a close cousin of Impression, Sunrise, which gave Impressionism its name. Here the colours are cooler and the boats more defined, but the subject is the same: the first light on the water. The painting belongs to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
Atmospheric and calm, it suits a living room, a study or a bathroom. Our Monet art prints include other harbour scenes from his home town. Our article on Claude Monet tells how a harbour view started a movement. Several sizes.
