A small red sun sinks into a sky of salmon pink and green haze, and its reflection drops straight down the river in a line of orange dashes. Dark islands of bare bushes float on both sides, a few tiny boats cross the water, and on the right a bare tree draws its branches against the sky.
Monet painted this winter sunset at Vétheuil in 1880, looking across to the village of Lavacourt. It is one of the canvases that most closely recall Impression, Sunrise, painted eight years earlier, with the same red disc and the same reflection. The painting is in the Petit Palais in Paris.
Moody and glowing, it suits a living room, a bedroom or a study with deep tones. Our Monet prints and posters include other views of Lavacourt, in summer light. Our article on Claude Monet tells what that winter meant for him. Several sizes.
