Big white clouds take up more than half of the canvas. Below them, a promenade shaded by a long line of trees runs down to the river, where small sailboats are moored and a puff of smoke rises from the town on the far bank. A few strollers, a woman in white and her companions, walk slowly on the path.
This is the Seine at Argenteuil around 1872, the stretch Parisians called the basin, wide enough for regattas. Monet had just moved there with Camille and their son, and the town became his open-air studio for six years. The original is at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
