A pebble beach stretches into the distance, lined with fishing boats pulled up on the shore. A bright blue one sits in the foreground, two fishermen chat beside another, and further along a few bathers and walkers dot the sand. The sea is a milky turquoise, the sky a grey mass of clouds.
In the summer of 1867 Monet stayed with his family at Sainte-Adresse, near Le Havre, while Camille was expecting their first child in Paris. He painted the beach several times, mixing working fishermen and holidaymakers. This version is in the Art Institute of Chicago.
Fresh and coastal, it suits a bathroom, a living room or a seaside home. Our Monet art prints include the regatta and the garden painted at Sainte-Adresse the same summer. For his youth in Normandy, read our article on Monet. Several sizes.
