Four straight poplar trunks cut the square canvas into equal bands, from bottom to top, as regular as the bars of a window. Behind them, a curving row of trees glows in pink, gold and violet, and the river at the bottom reflects the whole structure in the same colours.
Of all the poplars of 1891, this is the most geometric. Monet framed the trees so tightly that their tops are cut off, and the picture becomes a grid of verticals and horizontals. The canvas, now at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, looks forward to abstract art.
Graphic and serene, it is a perfect print for a modern living room, an office or a bedroom. Our Claude Monet art prints include other poplars from the same series, in sun and at twilight. Our article on Monet explains how the series were made. Square format, several sizes.
