The footbridge is still there, an arch crossing the picture, but it is now almost buried in vegetation. Everything is painted in thick, tangled strokes of deep green, teal and touches of red, and the only light comes from a pale patch of water under the bridge.
In the last years of his life, half blind from cataracts, Monet painted the Japanese bridge at Giverny again and again in a very free style. These canvases, long considered unfinished, were later admired by the American abstract painters, who saw in them the beginning of their own art.
Deep and textured, it brings a strong presence to a contemporary living room, an office or a dark-walled bedroom. Compare it with the calm 1899 bridges in our Monet posters. Our article on Monet's last years explains this late change. Several sizes.
