A colossal rock arch rises straight out of the sea and fills almost the whole canvas. Its surface is a patchwork of ochre, rust, lilac and grey, and through the opening you see the calm horizon, pale green and blue. Small waves break at its foot in white and violet strokes.
The Manneporte, the great door, is the largest of the three arches of Étretat, only reachable at low tide. Monet painted it several times in 1883 and 1886, sometimes taking real risks with the incoming tide. This tall version is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Monumental and colourful, it suits a hallway, an office or a living room with high ceilings. Our Claude Monet prints and posters include the other cliffs of Étretat. Our article on Monet tells the story of these stays on the coast. Several sizes, framed or not.
