The Houses of Parliament stand black against a sky of violet and rose, the Victoria Tower rising on the left like a dark block. The sun is a small red disc on the right, burning through the smog, and its glow spreads over the Thames below in soft pinks.
Monet painted the Parliament from St Thomas' Hospital across the river, at the end of the day, when the smoke of London's chimneys mixed with the river fog. He worked on these canvases for years, and this one, signed and dated 1903, is among the most dramatic.
Dark and glowing, it is a strong statement piece for a living room, a study or a bedroom with deep colours. Our Claude Monet prints and posters include the same building in blue fog and at other hours. Our article on his London years tells the story. Several sizes.
