Long, flame-like iris leaves cross the picture diagonally, and their pink and violet flowers dot the upper part. The path itself is a warm band of ochre and gold, and the whole surface is covered with thick, swirling strokes that make the plants seem to move in the heat.
Monet painted this path of his garden at Giverny during the First World War, when he was working on very large canvases. His eyesight was getting worse, colours were becoming warmer and more yellow, and he worked with long gestures. The painting belongs to the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Warm and expressive, it suits a contemporary living room, a studio or an entrance. Our Claude Monet art prints include his other late irises and water lilies. Our article on Monet's last years tells the story behind them. Square format, several sizes.
