A young mother cradles a sleeping child, both peaceful with their eyes closed, beneath a veil of blue and flowers. Beside them, an old woman rests her head in one hand. Her body is thin and stooped, and long grey hair veils her face.
Painted in 1905, this is one of Klimt’s most direct meditations on time. The figures form a narrow column of pattern against a dark, scuffed backdrop, reminiscent of aged timber or tree bark. The work was exhibited at the 1911 International Exhibition in Rome, where it was purchased by the Italian state. It remains in Rome at the National Gallery of Modern Art.
