Several young women lie asleep, entwined and afloat against a dark ground like a colourful raft. Purple, blue and pink spirals swirl across their dresses and blankets. One figure reaches an arm overhead, as though she’s just about to wake.
Klimt painted Die Jungfrau in 1913. Though the title means ‘The Virgin’, and points to one young woman, many interpret the other figures as her dreams, or as different stages of a woman’s life unfolding in sleep. The colours are among the brightest he ever used, a marked change from his familiar gold. The painting is held at the National Gallery in Prague.
With its joyful, dreamlike feel, it makes a striking feature in a bedroom or living room, from a Wellington villa to a modern Auckland home. Choose the size that suits your space, with or without a frame. Our Klimt prints and posters feature other dreamers too, including the water nymphs in Goldfish.
