A long green meadow in the sun, edged by dark trees. Above them, on an embankment, a little train passes, trailing a plume of grey smoke across the sky. In the meadow, a few women with parasols and a couple of strollers enjoy the afternoon.
Monet painted this scene around 1870, probably near Bougival or Louveciennes, west of Paris. It is one of his first pictures to include the railway, a theme that would lead him to the Gare Saint-Lazare a few years later. The canvas is now in the Musée d'Orsay.
Classic and peaceful, it suits a living room, an office or a country house. Our Claude Monet prints and posters include his other railway scenes. Our article on Monet tells the story of his early years near Paris. Several sizes, framed or unframed.
