On a bright summer day, the village of Vétheuil stretches along the far bank of the Seine, its church tower rising in the middle. Tall poplars stand on the left, the hills behind are green and gold, and the river in front is full of sparkling reflections, with a small boat crossing.
After the terrible winter of 1879 to 1880, summer came back to Vétheuil, and Monet painted the village in full light. His touch is lively and broken, each reflection a small dab of colour. The canvas is long, so we print it with a light border that keeps the whole riverbank.
