A very dark pond, almost black-green, with bright islands of lily pads floating across the upper half in long horizontal bands. Small pink and white flowers dot the leaves, and at the bottom a few more pads catch the light at the edge of the shadow.
In 1904 Monet painted the pond at different times of day, and some canvases, like this one, show it in deep shade, with only the floating leaves catching the sun. The contrast gives the picture a graphic, almost Japanese quality.
