The arches of Waterloo Bridge appear only as soft blue curves in a white fog. A few touches of yellow and lilac suggest the light trying to come through, and the edges of the sheet, slightly darker, frame the misty scene like a window.
This is a pastel, drawn quickly on paper during Monet's stay in London in 1901. Alongside his oil paintings, he made many pastels of the Thames, sometimes in a few minutes, to catch the fleeting effects of the fog before they changed.
Very light and airy, it suits a white bedroom, a bathroom or a calm office. Our Claude Monet posters include painted versions of the same bridge at different hours. Our article on Monet's London winters tells how these views were made. Several sizes, framed or not.
